Puzzle Pieces

“Are you sure you don’t need me?” I asked Phil as he stood by the door to leave the Postern.

“Aye, it shouldn’t take too long. I have a feeling we’ll be doing more talking later with Ana, Davros, and Titus. They just want an update. Plus, you need to get Ben here all sorted out,” Phil replied as Petro landed on the round table in the middle of the room.

Willy was already sitting there, exhausted from whatever it was he was doing during the fight.

“You mean since Lucian was a possible murder suspect, and the real shitbag escaped,” I clarified, referring to whoever the hell it was we were after trying to pin the initial murder on Lucian.

“Something like that,” Phil said, not wanting to repeat the statement.

While being a pretty crappy perspective on the situation, it could buy us some much-needed time, plus keep the Council’s hands out of things. But if we were pressed to answer truthfully, we would have to. Lucian was a hero, not the murderer of the initial victim.

This, of course, would lead to the situation being escalated. Though it had already deteriorated, a few select members of the Supreme and Senior Council suspected Councilman Darkwater’s involvement.

As Phil left, Ben walked to the table where Petro was standing next to Willy. “So, are you going to bother telling me why I’m standing in the middle of the Postern with Tom’s grandson?”

“I’m trying to figure that out myself. Well, I’m guessing Bo is still a little aggravated with you somehow locking him up, not to mention Lucian,” I said forcefully, making my point. Bo had disappeared as always as soon as more people started arriving.

Ben let out a huff. “I guess you’re right. If it weren’t for everyone there, I would probably be . . . well, let’s just say, not here.”

“Tell you what. Let Petro and I ask the questions, and after that, I’ll talk to you about anything you want,” I compromised, pulling out a few trinkets from my blazer, including the knife Maman Brigitte had given me.

As soon as the jewel-encrusted gold item hit the table, Ben’s eyes widened. “Where did you get that?” Ben took a step away from it.

“You know what this is?” I asked as Petro gave me a quick side glance.

“Unfortunately, yes. It was one of the items listed on a recent insurance claim,” Ben murmured, taking a closer look around the room.

“Well, boss,” Petro started. “It sounds like we have another piece of that puzzle. Why don’t you tell us what this knife does? It stinks to high heaven of black magic.”

“I know you were on the Event Horizon last year. I also happen to know why, and the other proceedings that transpired on that ship,” Ben said, giving me a stern look. “Funny thing, the knife was reported to be in the keep of several recently deceased individuals. I never had it, so I’m guessing that was all a rumor. I wonder who put that out there?”

“Okay, now that we have that out of the way.
